Why do we have to pull teeth?
Tooth extraction is one of the treatment options that is suggested in the last stage of treatment. In situations where the tooth cannot be repaired or a root canal cannot save it and in special conditions like an impacted tooth (e.g., wisdom tooth), extraction is the only choice.
Reasons
such as:
Decay and
infection:
If the level
of tooth decay and infection is such that it is impossible to save the tooth
through filling, root
canal treatment or other restorative methods, the dentist will suggest a
tooth extraction.
Crowding of
teeth and orthodontic treatment:
If the teeth
are messy and crowded or if one or more extra teeth have grown in, tooth
extraction is necessary so that the other teeth have enough space to align in a
normal direction.
A person may
need tooth extraction before or during orthodontic treatment.
Tooth
damage or injury:
If the tooth
is broken in an accident and the tooth fracture is severe, the tooth must be
extracted.
Periodontal diseases (gum disease):
Severe gum
disease damages the tissue and bone under the gums and eventually causes
severe loose teeth.
After tooth extraction, pain in that area and
bleeding is normal. By placing a gauze dressing on the wound, it can be
controlled. Keep the piece of gauze placed on the extracted tooth in the mouth
for at least half an hour with gentle pressure. Press the sterile gauze firmly
with your teeth for 4 hours. Then slowly remove the gauze, rinse your mouth
with cold water, and drink cold juice or ice cream. It is better to talk less
the first night and especially in the first 4 hours after tooth extraction.
Swelling may
occur after tooth extraction. In this case, the amount of swelling can be
reduced by using an ice compress on the wound.
Some tips
to do after pulling your tooth:
·
Do not eat hot foods
·
Decrease physical activity
·
Avoid brushing your teeth for 24 hours because it
can irritate the surgical tissues and cause bleeding.
·
Smoking should be avoided for a few days.
·
Avoid putting different medicines on the mouth and
if excessive bleeding continues, consult a dentist.
·
If the area becomes infected, see a specialist
immediately to fix it.
·
Use pain medications prescribed by the dentist for
pain relief.
What are
the methods of pulling and removing teeth?
·
Tooth extraction in a simple and conventional way
·
Surgical tooth extraction:
In some cases,
it is not possible to extract a tooth using simple extraction, so the dentist
is forced to perform surgery and pulls the patient's tooth with the help of
surgery. In case of the following problems, the tooth should be operated on:
·
A tooth that has not completely erupted from the
gum (impacted tooth).
·
A tooth that is too large to be pulled out at once
and must be crushed.
·
A tooth that is broken from the gum line.
